How it all Started
About 3 years ago, on one of those days in February when the sea mist lingers for days and it’s dark by mid-afternoon, Richard, clad in his thickest wetsuit, went for a surf at a local surfing spot. After some time playing in the freezing waves he left the sea, clutching his board and whilst walking back up the beach he came across a fellow surfer who was gathering armfuls of seaweed from the rocks. Richard asked him what he was doing and it turned out he was taking it home, like some foraged treasure, to his wife, so that she could bathe in it. He said, “Try it”.
So, Richard came home with a bucket of sandy brown seaweed and ran a bath…
Why Seaweed?
Howling winds, harsh sun, lashing rain, coastal chill and salty air. All elements that anyone who has has visited or lived in Cornwall will know about. But ever wondered what this coastal life does to your skin? Skin needs a little extra help in protecting itself from these strong Coastal climates. Seaweed undergoes the full force of these elements with no means of external protection, so it has had to develop its own system of resilience.
Iodine, minerals and antioxidants are carefully extracted from the seaweed. As they are absorbed into your skin, they improve cellular function and regeneration in the deeper layers of the epidermis.
The Sustainable Process
- The team at the Cornish Seaweed Bath Co. hand cut an olive brown (Fucus Serratus) variety of seaweed to harness its natural resilience and infuse this seaweed potency in their skincare range.
- They only cut the top part of the plant, which then has a similar effect to pruning plants in a garden and helps to stimulate regrowth as well as promoting a sustainable harvest.
- The seaweed is then laid out on handmade wooden racks to naturally air dry. This process usually takes between two to five days depending on the weather and humidity.
- What happens next to the seaweed depends on which hand-crafted products it is added to.
