12 Surprising Golf Facts for 2026: More Than Just a Game in Cornwall

Is golf a “real” sport? It’s a question we hear from time to time, usually from people who’ve never walked 18 holes! The truth is, golf is a fantastic blend of skill, strategy, and physical activity. It’s a game with a rich history, a high-tech future, and some truly surprising secrets.

As we look ahead in 2026, the game is more accessible and exciting than ever. Here are 12 facts about golf that might just change the way you see it—and inspire you to pick up a club on your next visit to Polzeath.

Myths Busted: Golf is a Serious Workout

  1. Burn Over 1,000 Calories: Forget the myth of golf being a leisurely stroll. If you walk our 4-mile course at The Point and carry your clubs, you can burn up to 1,200 calories. That’s more than a 60-minute HIIT class.
  2. It’s a Full-Body Workout: A powerful golf swing is a complex athletic movement that engages major muscle groups. Your core (abdominals), back (lats), chest (pectorals), and glutes all work together to generate power and precision. It’s a brilliant way to build rotational strength and flexibility.

From Feather Balls to Space-Age Tech

  1. Golf is Older Than You Think: While Scotland is credited with popularising the game over 500 years ago, some historians believe a similar game was played in China as far back as 943 AD!
  2. The First Golf Balls Were… Full of Feathers: Until the mid-1800s, the best golf balls were meticulously crafted from leather and stuffed with boiled goose feathers. They were expensive, difficult to make, and performed terribly when wet. We’ve come a long way!
  3. Dimples Make All the Difference: Those 300-400 dimples on a modern golf ball are a marvel of aerodynamics. They create a thin layer of turbulence that reduces air resistance (drag), allowing the ball to fly further and more accurately.

Weird, Wonderful & Out of This World

  1. There Are Two Golf Balls on the Moon: On February 6, 1971, NASA astronaut Alan Shepard famously attached a 6-iron head to a sample collector and hit two golf balls on the lunar surface. Talk about a “one giant leap” for your golf game!
  2. The World’s Most Famous Lefty is Right-Handed: Phil Mickelson, a legend of the left-handed swing, is naturally right-handed. He learned to play as a toddler by mirroring his father’s swing, and it stuck!
  3. The Odds of Two Holes-in-One are 1 in 67 Million: Making one ace is the dream of every golfer. Making two in the same round is statistically less likely than winning the lottery. But you have to be in it to win it!

Golf by the Numbers at The Point

  1. We Harvest Our Own Water: Every year, our greenkeeping team uses over 2.5 million litres of water to keep the course in pristine condition. Crucially, 100% of this water is sustainably sourced from our own boreholes on the course, protecting the local environment.
  2. We Use Over 1,000 Hours on Greens Alone: Just maintaining the putting surfaces is a huge job! Each year, our team spends over 1,000 hours just cutting, rolling, watering, and changing the holes on our 18 USGA-spec greens to ensure a perfect roll.
  3. Our Bunkers are Truly Local: The 150 tonnes of sand we use annually to keep our bunkers in top shape is sourced locally. It’s dredged from the nearby Camel Estuary, adding a genuine piece of Cornwall to your game.
