Unlock Your Best Golf Swing in 2026
There’s no feeling in golf quite like a perfectly struck shot, soaring towards the flag against a backdrop of the Cornish coast. And there’s no frustration quite like a swing that just won’t cooperate. If you’re looking to find more consistency and power in your game for 2026, you’re in the right place.
Modern golf coaching combines timeless fundamentals with a smarter understanding of how the body and technology work together. Here at The Point, our PGA Professionals use this approach every day. To get you started, here are five pro tips to help you unlock your best ever golf swing.
Tip 1: Nail Your Foundation (The Grip & Stance)
Before you even think about the swing itself, your setup has to be right. Your grip controls the clubface, and your stance provides the power and balance.
- The Grip: The most common and effective grip is the Vardon or overlapping grip. For a right-handed player, place your right pinky finger in the space between your left index and middle finger. This unifies your hands so they work as a single unit. Your grip should be firm, but not tight—imagine holding a tube of toothpaste without squeezing any out.
- The Stance: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart for a mid-iron, with your weight balanced evenly. Hinge from your hips, keeping your back relatively straight, and let your arms hang naturally.
2026 Tech Tip: Use your smartphone! Prop it up and record a short video of your setup from both “face-on” and “down-the-line.” You’ll be amazed what you see. In every golf lesson at The Point, we use video analysis to give you instant, actionable feedback.
Tip 2: The Engine Room (Rotation & Power)
Amateurs often swing with their arms, but real power comes from the ground up. The key is to use your body correctly. The downswing should start with a rotation of your hips towards the target, followed by your torso, and then your arms and the club. This sequence creates effortless power and speed.
2026 Fitness Tip: Great rotation comes from good mobility. The modern golfer knows that time in the gym is just as important as time on the range. Simple exercises focusing on hip and thoracic (upper back) mobility can dramatically improve your turn.
Tip 3: Start with Intention (The Takeaway)
The first two feet of your backswing set the tone for everything that follows. A common fault is to quickly lift the club or snatch it away with your hands.
Instead, focus on starting the swing “low and slow.” Feel like you are drawing the clubhead straight back along the target line in one smooth motion, using your shoulders and torso, not just your hands. This creates width and keeps the club on the correct path, preventing a multitude of problems later in the swing.
Tip 4: Feel the “Whoosh” (Speed & Release)
Want to know where the speed in your swing should happen? Try this simple drill.
Turn a club upside down and hold it by the shaft, just below the clubhead. Now, make your normal swing. Listen for the “whoosh” sound the shaft makes as it cuts through the air. Your goal is to make the loudest “whoosh” happen after the point where the ball would be, towards the target. Most amateurs make the whoosh too early. This drill trains you to save your speed for where it matters most: impact.

Tip 5: The Picture-Perfect Finish (Balance & Follow-Through)
Your follow-through isn’t just the end of the swing; it’s the result of a good one. If your swing is correctly sequenced and balanced, you should be able to hold your finish comfortably until the ball lands.
The 3-Second Hold Challenge: On every full swing, try to hold your finish for three full seconds. Your chest should face the target, your right shoulder should be closer to the target than your left (for a right-hander), and almost all of your weight should be on your front foot. If you are off-balance or falling backwards, it’s a clear sign that something earlier in the swing needs work.
