As we reach the midpoint of another vibrant season at The Point, it’s the perfect time to reflect on some of the exciting improvements and innovations that have taken shape across the golf course over the past year.

Embracing the future: autonomous mowers

One of our most transformative upgrades has been the rollout of autonomous mowers. Starting in late January, we’ve gradually implemented this technology in three phases, with full integration set to complete in August. By then, eight autonomous mowers supported by six GPS masts will cover all fairways and most semi-rough areas. While greens, tees, and approaches still receive the traditional mower treatment, this new system is freeing up our greenkeeping team to focus on enhancing surface quality and overall playability.

Bunker beautification

After a five-year journey, our bunker renovation project is now complete. All bunkers have been lined with rubber crumb, significantly improving drainage and aesthetics while making them playable year-round. Notable layout changes include:

• Hole 1: A reduction in the size of the right-hand fairway bunker, plus the addition of a new bunker 50 yards closer to the tee.
• Hole 15: Removal of the left-hand fairway bunker, replaced by two new bunkers positioned just before and just beyond the original site.

Planting for play and wildlife

We’ve planted over 3,000 trees and shrubs to add character and encourage biodiversity across the course. Gorse now stands proudly on the 8th and 15th, as well as several other strategic locations – chosen not only for its striking definition but also as a cost-effective way to improve wildlife habitats.

Equipment enhancements

To help maintain top-quality surfaces with minimal disruption, we’ve welcomed two powerful additions to our machinery lineup:

• A pedestrian aerator with disc-seeder capabilities for year-round surface care.
• A Ventrac utility tractor – a multi-functional workhorse designed to:
o Tackle hard-to-reach mowing zones
o Manage steep banks and woodland areas
o Improve set aside rough management

Smart irrigation, smarter maintenance

Thanks to our upgraded irrigation system, we’re able to apply treatments and carry out essential maintenance regardless of weather conditions. This has allowed our team to stay ahead of mowing and maintenance tasks, even as dry spells challenge water resources. Without our irrigation infrastructure, we’d be facing a far tougher season.

Maintenance

To keep The Point’s playing surfaces in top condition, our dedicated greens team is carrying out essential treatments throughout the year. These efforts ensure the course remains healthy, resilient, and a joy to play.

• Aeration – relieving soil compaction to improve water and air circulation
• Verti-cutting/scarifying – removing organic matter and lateral growth for stronger turf
• Top dressing – smoothing surfaces and enhancing grass health
• Overseeding – introducing fresh seed to encourage thicker, more vibrant turf

These processes work together to promote better root development, disease resistance, and overall plant vitality, so you can expect pristine conditions each time you tee off.
