Top Things to Look Forward to in 2020 A Whole Extra Day Every four years in the Gregorian calendar, an extra day is added to the calendar in order to synchronize it with the solar year. It takes the earth a little bit less than 365 ¼ days (365.242 days) to orbit the Sun (solar year). For this reason, the full day is only added once every four years. 2020 is indeed one of these years. A Fantastic Year for Sport 2020 will see a full sporting calendar as with any other year, however, there are a number of less frequent events being held alongside the regular calendar: Six Nations Rugby – 1st February – 14th March. For those who have only just got over the Rugby World Cup, there is more excitement in store with Europe’s top teams taking each other on. UEFA Euro 2020 – The tournament is scheduled to be held in 12 cities in 12 European countries from 12 June to 12 July 2020. With England already qualified for the tournament, it is sure to be an excited few weeks for Football fans. Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games – Scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020 (25 August to 6 September – Paralympics) in Tokyo, Japan. Ryder Cup Golf – The 43rd Ryder Cup Matches will be held in the United States from September 25 to 27, 2020, on the Straits course at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin. Team Europe is the reigning cup holder after its famous 17½–10½ victory over Team USA in 2018 at Le Golf National. A Brand New Par 3 Tom and his team have been busy amongst the trees to the right of the current 7th hole over the spring and summer months constructing what will form a brand new par 3. The hole will play uphill across the current 7th hole over a low Cornish stone wall with a bunker to the front right of the green. Learn more about the hole and follow updates on its progress in one of our previous blogs here. Less Plastic Pollution Plastic straws, drink stirrers and cotton buds with plastic stems will be banned from sale and use in England from April 2020, the government has confirmed. It is hoped to vastly reduce the litter and other environmental impacts of the nearly 5bn plastic straws currently used each year in England, along with more than 300m plastic stirrers and close to 2bn cotton buds with plastic stems. This is a welcome move for coastal communities, in particular, Cornwall, which see thousands and thousands of disposable plastic items washed up along each beach, each day. To learn more about the impacts of plastic pollution visit the Beach Guardian social media page who are a local charity raising awareness and organising beach cleans to highlight awareness. 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower Sailing The year 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the historic voyage of the Mayflower ship from the UK to the ‘New World’ of America. There will be a series of events and gathering to mark the occasion centring around Plymouth on September 16th 2020, where the Mayflower departed the UK. Learn more about the history surrounding the ship with 132 onboard which is now responsible for around 30 million descendants in the US.
